Some Books I Read in 2002
America (E.R. Frank)
Big Mouth and Ugly Girl (Joyce Carol Oates)
Blister (Susan Shreve)
Burger Wuss (M.T. Anderson) –fast food, HS, Adrian Hegemanish.
Cheating Lessons (Nan Willard Cappo) -When her team is announced as finalists in the state Classics Bowl contest, Bernadette suspects that cheating may have been involved. Fairly fun to read but didn’t really wash.
Damage (A.M Jenkins)
Evvy’s Civil War (Miriam Brenaman)
Falling From Fire (Teena Booth) –house burned down – family life
Feed (M.T. Anderson) –futuristic HS story: society as corporate consumerism run amok. Great HS discussion book (w/ swearing)
Firesong (William Nicholson) –3rd in Wind on Fire Trilogy. Good! (My fave was the 2nd one, Slaves of the Mastery, which is funnier than the other two. All three are distinctive and lyrical and plain and delightful.)
Gathering Blue (Lois Lowry)
Handbook for Boys (Walter Dean Myers)
Just Ask Iris (Lucy Frank)
Mosh, A Dog from Space (Daniel Pinkwater) –easy j –funny.
My Perfect Life (Dyan Sheldon) –sequel to Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. Not as good.
On the Fringe (ed. Donald R. Gallo) –stories about alternative/outcast high school kids. Good.
Razzle (Ellen Wittlinger)
Shadow Spinner (Fletcher) –about a girl who helps Shahrazad track down stories
The Gospel According to Larry (Janet Tashjian)
The House of the Scorpion (Nancy Farmer)
Three Clams and an Oyster (Randy Powell) During their humorous search to find a fourth player for their flag football team, three high school juniors are forced to examine their long friendship, their individual flaws, and their inability to try new experiences.
What Would Joey Do? (Jack Gantos)
